Last two open gyms this week!!!

Hello everyone,

Just a quick reminder that we will have our last two fall open gyms this week. Wed and Thurs from 6-8pm. Tryouts begin on Monday the 11th. Returning players that played for MMHS last season will try out from 3-5pm. All new incoming freshmen and sophomores will try out from 5-7pm. Remember that you need to have a current physical on file with Patty, our trainer, before you will be allowed to participate in tryouts. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Open Gym and Physicals this week - 10/30/13

Good morning everyone,

Just a quick note for this week. Due to Thursday being Halloween, and the fact that most of us will want to spend that with our families (myself included), we will only have one open gym this week, on Wednesday 10/30, from 6-8pm. Also just a quick reminder that physicals will be held this same night (Wednesday) here at MMHS. Any girls needing a physical can quickly get that taken care of, and then come to open gym for the remainder of the time. Physicals are only $20, and that money comes back to us through training supplies, so I would encourage any players who still need a physical to take advantage of this. Remember, you MUST have a current physical (in other words, from this current school year) on file with our trainer Patty, in order to be able to participate in tryouts. Please let me know if there are any questions.

Thanks,

-Coach

Physicals NEXT WEEK @ MMHS

Patty (our athletic trainer) has just announced the next round of physicals here @ MMHS. Physicals will be held here at the high school in the gym areas on Wednesday, October 30th, at 6:00 pm. The cost is $20 (normally much cheaper than going to a family Dr.), and she wanted us all to know that the money actually goes into the training program here to purchase items such as athletic tape, pre-wrap, and the other items Patty stocks for training purposes here at the school. So the $20 will ultimately come back around to most of our players sometime throughout the course of the season.

Please remember that it is now state policy that ALL athletes MUST have a current physical on file with the school (so in this case, Patty), before they will be allowed to participate in tryouts.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Also, remember tonight is the only open gym this week.

Thanks!

Fall Opener and Open Gyms

Hello everyone,

The Fall Opener tournament that we went to last year is happening again this year, but at Springville High School instead of M-V (because Coach Camie Oakey is now there....). It is on Friday October 4th and Saturday October 5th. There is a 4 game guarantee over the two days. It is $275 per team if we register before the 23rd, $300 after that. We would just divide the cost by the total players. (ie: 10 players = $30, etc.).
Please let me know if you/your daughter is interested in playing by THIS FRIDAY 9/20/13. If you commit to playing, we expect you to be there - we don't want to register multiple teams and then have to forfeit right before the tournament  - that really messes things up for the coaches, other teams, and tournament in general. Please e-mail me ASAP if you/your daughter wants to play. They will have a varsity division, and probably a combined JV/soph division.
Also, we will only have one open gym this week, on Thursday, from 6-8pm. This is due to parent-teacher conferences on Wed.
Lastly, please remind your players that eligibility for winter sports (basketball) is determined by their grades for this first term. If they do not meet eligibility requirements (must have a 2.0 cumulative GPA, and only allowed ONE non-passing grade - F's and NG's would be non-passing grades), then they can not play.
Thanks!

August Update!!!

Hello all,
I hope the summer continues to go well for you. I wanted to post a quick update, as I have been getting a couple of questions:
First, as it stands right now, we will be practicing during the season every day after school, just like in years past. There were no girls PE teachers available to supervise an advanced conditioning class for girls, thus there is not girls adv conditioning. I think some are getting confused with the course that is available for boys only. Second, it will be entirely too difficult for all players to find other ways to adjust their schedules with the few options we were given last spring - those are just not feasible for all players. Thus, at this time, I am making the decision to continue with the practice schedule during the season as it has been in years past, and hopefully we can re-visit the idea of a girls adv cond class for the 2014-2015 school year. I will certainly bring it up with the counselors and administration next spring, to see if it will be a possibility for the future.
Second announcement: Open gyms will begin again after school starts. I was able to get the gyms reserved on Wed and Thurs nights, from 6-10, just as we have done in the past. Currently I am planning on Wed Aug 28 and Thur Aug 29 for our next open gyms. We will either go from 6-8 or 8-10, depending on what we work out with the boys team. For now, plan on 6-8, and I will let you know if that changes. We will plan on holding open gyms every Wed and Thur from Aug 28 until tryouts begin on November 11th, unless the gyms are in use for home volleyball games.
As always, please feel free to contact me if there are any questions. Also, please begin checking the website again for up to date information: mmhsgirlsbasketball.blogspot.com.

Open Gym Cancelled for 7/11, other announcements!!!

Hello again everyone,
After conferring with the other coaches, we have decided to cancel tomorrow's open gym, due to such a low turnout this week. We have a large number of players out of town for a multitude of reasons, ranging from the vegas tournament to girls camp, family vacations and reunions, etc. Due to the gyms being refinished over the next 2 weeks, and then the 2 weeks of moratorium after that, we will try to begin open gyms again around the 3rd week in August when school resumes. I will update you on days and times as it gets closer. It is always a little more challenging to get gym time in the fall due to volleyball season, so we will just have to see what is available.

Remember the 10,000 shot challenge that is currently taking place - I hope all players plan on participating. If you need further info on this, or a new score sheet, etc, please see the blog entry below!! Also keep checking the website for other announcements periodically so you can stay on top of the happenings with the basketball program.

Remember to keep practicing on your own this summer and fall as well - although it is only July, tryouts will come around faster than you can imagine!

Have a great remainder of your summer, and we'll see everyone again in August!

Final open gyms of summer break this week!!

Hello everyone,
Just a reminder that we will have two open gyms this week - Wed and Thurs from 6-8pm. Due to the fact that they are still planning on shutting the gyms down for re-finishing beginning next week on the 15th, these will most likely be our last open gyms of summer break. We will not resume them until after school starts in mid-August. Let's have a great turnout for these last two sessions!!

UVU Payment clarification.........

The UVU payment situation is confusing....

Here is a breakdown of how it should go. Please let me know if you have any questions.....I am sorry for the confusion:

#1: There is one registration form and payment that you should mail directly to Cathy Nixon - that would be for the High Intensity camp. I really have nothing to do with that - it is just something I am suggesting the girls attend.

#2: The TEAM CAMP  is separate from the High Intensity camp. For the TEAM CAMP - I will sign the team up for it. But, you will need to make the $150 check out separately to UVU. the players can bring me the check, and I will turn all checks in to Cathy at the same time.

#3: Lastly, the Jamborees are even separate from that. I will pay for the two jamborees through the school, and then have you reimburse MMHS for the two jamborees like we do for the other tournaments. This cost will vary depending on how many players are on each team, so hold off on paying for the jamborees until I let you know a cost for that. It will be $300 per team, so probably around $40 per player.....

So ultimately, you will make 3 separate payments - one for Team Camp (given to me, but made out to UVU), one for Jamborees (given to me, but made out to MMHS), and one for High Intensity (mailed directly to UVU) if the girls choose to attend that.....

Is that as clear as mud?? :) I am sorry it is so confusing, but that is how UVU has it set up, so we just kind of have to jump through the hoops...... Please let me know if there are any other questions

3 on 3 Hoopfest Tournament

Here is information on the 2nd Annual 3 on 3 Hoopfest at Mountain View on May 18th. These types of tournaments can be a lot of fun for our players, and another great opportunity to keep playing basketball, in a different format, during the off-season. Players will need to organize and register their own teams if this is something they would like to participate in.

Here is the info from Coach Oakey:

There are three divisions in the tournament for both boys and girls: 7-9th grade, High School, and High School Graduates and above.

This is a really fun event and a great way for you or your athletes to play some competitive basketball. Last year we had 50 teams register from all over Utah County and we hope to double it this year. Both the men's and women's divisions included many ex-college players and was very competitive. Each participant will get a t-shirt as well as other prizes for the winners in each division.

Go to www.mvhsgirlsbasketball.blogspot.com to register and get more information. The cost is $60/team and each team will play at least 3 games.

Check out the flyer and please let your athletes know about this fun event. Feel free to forward this to anyone I may have missed!

Thought for today: Winning Habits....

Winning Habits

“Champions do not become champions on the court. They merely become recognized on the court.  They become champions because of their daily routine and daily commitment to excellence. Players do not decide their future; they decide their habits and their habits decide their future!”

Everything begins with how you think and what you think. You have 100% control over your thoughts.

 Your thoughts become your words.
Your words become your actions.
Your actions become your habits.
Your habits become your character.
Your character becomes your destiny.

Therefore, being successful at anything is determined by your daily choices and habits.
Speaking of habits… winning is a habit.  Unfortunately so is losing.

 Winners are confident. Losers worry.
Winners hustle. Losers loaf.
Winners give praise. Losers complain.
Winners listen. Losers talk.
Winners are accountable. Losers point the finger.
Winners are enthusiastic. Losers lack passion.
Winners are great teammates. Losers are selfish.
Winners never quit. Losers give up.
Winners have focus. Losers get frazzled.
Winners have discipline. Losers are weak.
Winners play for ‘we.’ Losers play for ‘me.’
Winners have urgency. Losers procrastinate.
Winners have pride. Losers don’t care.
Winners are coachable. Losers already know it all. Winners are humble. Losers are cocky.

Winners prepare their minds and bodies to win on a daily basis.  Winners do what losers don’t want to do.

Do you have the habits of a winner?

UVU Camp Information

I have posted a page of information regarding the various UVU basketball camps and jamborees that we would like our high school players to attend this summer. Check it out and plan accordingly. In addition to the team camp and jamborees, I would encourage all players to try to make it to the High Intensity camp in late June. Players that have attended this in the past have found it to be a good experience. Here is the link to the info:

4th Period class options for next year...

In order to be able to have practice during the A-4 class period next season, the players will have to set up their schedules accordingly. Here are the 3 options that were presented:

Option 1: Register for Seminary class during A-4, attend this during 1st term. Switch to early morning Seminary during 2nd and 3rd term, in order to open up A-4 for practice. Then switch back to A-4 Seminary during 4th term if desired.

Option 2: Find a 1 semester credit class during A-4 with a teacher that is willing to work with you. Take this class 1st term, and then finish the class during 4th term.. You would then be in basketball practice during A-4 for 2nd and 3rd term.. (Mr. Blakey, in the counseling center, may be able to help you find a class/teacher for this option).

Option 3: If you are taking 2 or more A.P. courses, you may sign up for the A.P. Study Hall in the Library. Take this study hall during A-4. During basketball season, the administration will let you out of the study hall to participate in A-4 basketball practice.

Again, the coaches and administration are open to other viable options as well, so if you have any other ideas, please let us know. IF we are going to go this route, ALL players have to be able to work their schedules out accordingly. If some players can't work it out, we will have to stick with our normal practice schedule that we have used in years past.
